Don’t Just Get a Job: Get a Life

Our work is helping people discover their passion and how to generate immediate results in getting a life they love. So when our son’s 17-year-old friend Ruth glumly said she planned getting a summer job at a local bookstore we asked her, “Why do you want to work there?” Ruth said, “I don’t know. It’s near my house?”

We often find people have settled for a “Thank Goodness It’s Friday” life because they never learned how to discover their passions or how to create a life from them. Though we hear people say, “I have a great life.” when we ask they often admit, “No, I don’t like my job.” They have settled for a job that meets very few of their needs.

To discover Ruth’s passion we asked what she enjoys most. She lit up and said she likes animals. After hearing what Ruth knows about animals and identifying places in her community to work with them it was easy to outline steps she could take to find a job she was excited about.

This process simply didn’t occur to her. Ruth learned that a job is what you do to earn the money you need to enjoy your weekends. No one is taught otherwise. Try remembering one time at school you were asked: “What do you need today?”, “What would be exciting for you to do?”, or “How can we help you learn to create a life you love?”

When you learn to answer these questions for yourself you can begin to see that earning a living can mean more than just getting a job. One of the first things we do in our seminar is show people a process that helps them identify what they value most. (Download our Personal Values worksheet free from www.FocusedAttention.com.) But discovering your passion is just one of the first steps.

Getting a life doesn’t occur in one huge leap, it requires that you learn a series of steps to take. Even though Ruth saw a clear path to getting a job she was excited about she was still resigned to taking the one that seemed easier to get. We could tell her fear of failure was causing her to choose sleeping on the floor so she wouldn’t risk falling out of bed. Another step we teach is how to take anything that might prevent you from being in action and transform that very thing into a commitment to creating a life you love – one step at a time.

Our seminars are an opportunity for us to live our passions, one of which is offering people effective tools for living their passion. We encourage you to make a commitment to learn everything you need to live more passionately.
