Fear

You can learn so much from animals. We have a dog named Maxx and a cat named Socrates. It seems that whenever we stop and really watch them they become little windows to eternal wisdom.

One recent evening while I (Beth) was relaxing watching a movie, I looked over to see Maxx standing by the back door waiting patiently to come back in. I went back to watching my movie.

After he saw me look at him, he started barking. I guess he was sure that since I'd seen him I certainly could let him in NOW. I didn't want to get up and let him in that moment so I looked back over and told him to stop barking. He stopped for a moment and then started again.

In that moment I realized just how happy and worry free Maxx is. He is not concerned about any judgment I might have of him and he certainly has none of him self. He isn't worried I won't like him, continue to be his friend, or any number of other fears we as humans have about asking for what we want. Especially in the face of "NO!"

This little piece of animal wisdom got us to start observing ourselves a little more closely. As we did we noticed there are times when we hesitate in asking for what we want or before checking in with someone about something that might seem tense.

Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.
~ Marie Curie

As we looked more closely we discovered something about our hesitation in the face of these subtle or not so subtle situations. We hesitate because we both expect and try to avoid confrontation.

Can you relate? This month's article came out of our little piece of animal wisdom. We hope it will support you in having more fun and less stress in your life too.

With love and gratitude,

Beth and Neill
