A Note From Beth and Neill

Committed to A World That
Works for Everyone

With our community growing as rapidly as it is every day, we realized that some of you may not know us very well.

All of you who've been with us for a while probably already know what's important to us and why we embarked on this adventure.

For all our new friends, we want to take this opportunity to introduce you to our vision and mission for Focused Attention.

Simply stated, our grand vision is "a world that works for everyone." A world where no one struggles to get their basic needs met. A world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and evolve toward the highest expression of themselves.

Now, in order to fulfill on this vision our mission could have been to help people learn to meet their basic survival needs--a truly noble and worthwhile endeavor. One that's already supported by thousands of compassionate souls around the world. We are deeply grateful for their work.

But this isn't where our passion lives.

We were observers of human nature from a very young age--curious about why we think, react and relate in the ways we do. This led us to investigate what lies at the root of so many people still struggling to meet their basic needs in this modern age, let alone evolving toward their fullest expression.

Even more important to us than learning about these things is to figure out ways to turn these understandings into very practical methods for helping people live more fulfilling lives. And to teach skills that will help them cooperate as they create a more sustainable future that supports the evolution of everyone.

Along the way we've discovered many people who's life work is to identify these root causes. Introducing all the people and the nature of their work is too involved for an issue of this newsletter.

What we've gleaned from their work is: Everything depends on the quality of our relationships and the values we bring to them.

We truly believe that a significant shift in the world can come from creating better relationships with ourselves and others. It is this belief that drives our commitment to our mission--which is offering the skills people need to create truly satisfying lives, one relationship at the time.

A World That Works for Everyone

We'd like to be of service to as many people around the world as we can. And of course everyone's situation is different--how much time they have available, their finances, where they are on the spectrum of personal and spiritual development, and as you probably know, people have many different learning styles.

To accomplish this, we're constantly creating resources, products and services in different price ranges and in different forms. We do this so that as many people as possible will have access to and can learn from what we have to offer.

This is very important to us. Getting this information and the skills we have to offer into as many hands as possible is our small part in supporting the global shift in consciousness.

We are always encouraged to hear the stories you send us about how our work is helping to create better and better relationships for you.

So please know, whatever your financial situation, time constraints, or learning style--if you are committed to changing your relationship with yourself and others--and in turn supporting a world that works for everyone--we are here for you! Please let us know how we can help.

We hope this supports you in knowing us a little bit better. :o)

With love and a commitment to supporting a world that works for everyone,
Beth and Neill

Doesn't it follow that the quality of your life is a direct result of the quality of your relationships?

We think so, and that's why we believe it is essential to develop your skill in the art of conscious connection--communicating with others in ways that create a happier and more satisfying life.

Can You Learn Life Lessons From a Dog?

We're always on the lookout for ideas about how to live a happier more fulfilling life and we've noticed that life lessons can come from the most curious places.

Recently, ours neighbors adopted a new puppy. He is the cutest little thing. If you pay attention, dogs can teach you profound life lessons--in addition to the wonderful benefits you would usually expect, like being a loving companion.

Miles is one of the most precocious puppies that we've ever known. He's a beautiful black lab mix with tons of spunky energy and what always seems to be a "smile" on his face. By watching Miles closely, we remembered two important lessons.

What Can Miles Teach us?

The first lesson we have re-learn from Miles is: Ask for what you want. Too often we find ourselves doing things on our own, even if we could have gotten help from someone else. How many times have you just done something yourself rather than ask if someone is willing to help you? Someone might be very willing to give you what you want why not ask for it.

Miles never seems to hesitate to ask for what he needs, when he needs it. It doesn't matter if he's hungry, wants to play, or needs to go outside, whenever he wants something he immediately asks for it. We do our best to be like Miles. We have even created a habit of asking for least one thing a day--it helps us practice this lesson.

As we tried to understand why it is so easy for Miles and so difficult for many people to ask for what we want. We have settled on two important reasons for this difference:

First: Miles is not worried that he'll hear the dreaded word "NO." "He simply has no fear at all about this. Funny, but even when he does hear "no," he seems sure that if he only asks a couple more times, he will eventually get a yes.

On those really rare occasions when he does hear "no" as a final answer, he is able to walk away and move on to the next important activity in his day, without giving it a second thought.

Why is it So Easy for Miles?

Second: The other important difference between us and Miles is that he doesn't spend any time worrying about whether he is bothering anyone or what the other person thinks of him for asking. Miles has no investment in other people's reactions, and he takes on no responsibility for their feelings. If someone doesn't want to do what he wants, it's really no big deal. He moves on, without worrying about that person's opinion of him.

Miles certainly has not spent a lot of time delving into these ideas about himself and others, nor does he seem to have opinions about it one way or another. But, even without having an opinion, he has taught us something critical--ask for what you want, you might just get it. And you're definitely no worse off than you were before you asked.

Try It Yourself: "Ask for What You Want"

If at least once every day you can identify one thing you want, and then ask for it, you will find that there are many times that you get exactly what we want. This is a simple way to achieve more than you could on your own, and the perfect way to put into practice the lessons learned from Miles. If hearing "no" is the worst thing that can happen, why wait. Start today and, ask away!
